Fundamentals of Industrial Hydraulics

 Learning Outcomes:           

On completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the units and basic concepts of hydraulics such as pressure, Pascal’s Law, hydraulic leverage versus mechanical leverage, simple hydraulic press
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of how hydraulic components and actuators work
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of troubleshooting and maintenance practices for hydraulic systems.

 

 

 

Demonstrate an understanding of the units and basic concepts of hydraulics such as pressure, Pascal’s Law, hydraulic leverage versus mechanical leverage, simple hydraulic press

Objectives:

  1. Understand the units of measure for pressure (Pascal, bar, lb per square inch
  2. Understand the basic laws governing fluid power: Pascal’s law, Boyle’s law, Charles’ law, static head pressure.
  3. Understand work and power, compressibility of fluids.
  4. Understand hydraulic versus mechanical leverage
  5. Understand the workings of a simple hydraulic press
Demonstrate an understanding of how hydraulic components and actuators work

Objectives:

  1. Understand various types of hydraulic pumps
  2. Understand various types of valves, cylinders and motors
  3. Understand uses of hydraulic hoses and fittings
  4. Understand hydraulic circuits and schematics
Demonstrate understanding of troubleshooting and maintenance practices for hydraulic systems.

Objectives:

  1. Understand uses of hydraulic oil, oil and viscosity recommendations; maintenance of hydraulic fluids in the system
  2. Understand causes of component failure; effect of incorrect flow, excessive temperature, etc.
  3. Safety procedures and practices related to hydraulic equipment
